Sub-Saharan Africa cannot sustain its present economic resurgence unless it eliminates the hunger that affects nearly a quarter of its people, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) argues in the newly released Africa Human Development Report 2012: Towards a Food Secure Future. This video presents the key messages from the report.
Interviews

Helen Clark, the Administrator of UNDP on the importance of meeting people’s basic need for food; looking at the chain of production and distribution; and, in light of the crises in the Sahel and the Horn of Africa, the importance of anticipating extreme weather events.

Meles Zenawi, Prime Minister of Ethiopia, talks about the impact of weather variability and climate change on agricultural production in Africa.

Calestous Juma, Harvard Professor, on the importance of food security for Africa’s development, technology, markets and knowledge.

Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, President of Liberia, talks about the role of women in food security in Africa. Yields in food crops are likely to be 20 percent higher in Africa if women have the same access to productive assets and decision-making.

Tegegnework Gettu, Director of UNDP Africa, on the harsh paradox of food security in a world of plenty. In spite of its impressive economic growth over the last decade, Africa continues to be food insecure, with dramatic results on human development.

Priya Gajraj, Head of the Country Support Cluster for West and Central Africa, presenting the key messages of the Africa Human Development Report from Brussels.
